Support your local horse rescues by volunteering or by donating. Every little bit can help, no matter how small.
Educate yourself! Know the true facts of horse slaughter. Also educate yourself about the reasons for overpopulation of horses. If you own backyard horses, don't breed them!

Learn as much as you can about gentle training methods by reading books (try the library!), talking with and watching professionals, and free online articles. Trust me, when it comes to free learning, the internet is your friend! Be safe, if you are inexperienced seek professional help and never work with a horse you are uncomfortable around. But DO learn and educate yourself. Training is a horse's insurance policy... it could very well save his life one day. Trained horses are far more valuable than untrained ones, and it could keep him from facing slaughter down the road.
