Viande Richelieu, Bouvry No Longer Accepting Thoroughbreds For Slaughter

After returning two slaughter-bound former racehorses, Canuki and Cactus Cafe, Viande Richelieu, the company that operates two of Canada’s four equine slaughterhouses, appears to be backing away from accepting Thoroughbreds for slaughter.

Geneve Ethier, an administrative technician from Richelieu, stated in an e-mail that the Canuki and Cactus Cafe case “did occur major problems to us and a lot of time, efforts, and money consuming. So to avoid that in the future, the plant advises all his suppliers to not BUY those thoroughbred[s] and overall no have them ship to us. . . . For us, thoroughbred[s] are definitely banned from our premises.”

It is estimated that Thoroughbreds comprise  approximately 14% of the total horses slaughtered in Canada for meat. Whether or not this is a sign of a dying industry as consumers become educated in the health risks and terrible suffering of slaughter horses, it can hardly be refuted that it is a momentous step in the right direction, and a wonderful success for horse owners and lovers everywhere.
